| Fuente Alamo |
|
Fuente Alamo is situated 12 km northwest from Alcala off the Priego de Cordoba road, with a population of approximately 305. An early source of drinking water surrounded by great poplars gives the village its name.
The properties in Fuente Alamo are grouped on the slope of a small hill in the direction of La Rábita. Its streets winding through the village are perfectly adapted to the layout of the land. Between its buildings there is a small and modest shrine that goes back to the eighteenth century. It has an image in the altar to San Antonio, patron saint of the village. There are also two interesting paintings: one of the virgin of the Mercedes and the other dedicated to Jesus and the Verónica. Also preserved is an inscription that contains the emblem of the cross of the pansy, apparently coming from the old convent of the High Nuns of Alcala.
At the edge of the village in Fuente Alamo can be found a Moslem watchtower, integrated into a cortijo that takes the name of the Tower. At an altitude of 670 mts it dominated the area. To the south of the watchtower are the ruins of the prestigious baths of the Ardales whose sulphurous blue waters are said to have healing powers. Around the baths can be found the ruins of an inn which was part of a settlement. Its poor state of conservation should not prevent the reconstruction of this precious place of rest and treatment of diseases.
