Alcalá la Real has been in existence since prehistoric times and many of the traditions and customs practised today are reminders of the town’s rich history. From the time the Romans first settled on La Mota, through the Muslim occupation of the town and into the Christian era, each successive culture has left its mark on the modern-day society and its many colourful celebrations.
JULY Etnosur (Ethnic Encounters in the Sierra Sur)- This festival has been celebrated since 1997. Originally, the entire event took place in the Paseo los Alamos although over the years it has become so famous throughout Europe that it now needs to be celebrated in several venues around the town.
The main attractions of this festival are the musicians that come from every corner of the Earth to perform in free concerts. You will also find street theatre, a circus, jugglers, various exhibitions, workshops and forums for debate. Each year a prize is awarded in solidarity with a Non-Governmental Organization. In 2007, the Hindu monks were awarded the prize for their work in campaigning for the independence of Tibet. There is also a market in which artisans sell theirwares and in the ‘Pipiripao’ one can enjoy foods from all over the world. Campsites are available.

AUGUST Festivals of Patron Saints- This month, when many people who’ve moved away return to Alcalá for their holidays, the town celebrates its Festivals of August. Throughout the month, there is a series of cultural events that include concerts, theatre performances and exhibits.
The townspeople also celebrate the Feast of la Virgen de las Mercedes, the patron saint of Alcalá la Real. On the eve of the festival, there is a huge fireworks display and thousands of faithful from around the region accompany the image of the virgin as she is paraded through the streets.
